One of the things we love most about Portland culture is the encouragement to express one’s authentic self through and through. As we see threats to the LGBTQ+ community on a national and global scale, we at The Francis believe it’s more important than ever to continue to lift up the people of Portland and ensure that they feel safe and supported. While Pride Month is a great excuse to celebrate our diverse community, we strive to continue that celebration year-round.

When visiting Portland, Maine—at any time of year—we encourage you to support some of the wonderful LGBTQ+ businesses that we are so lucky to have. We’ve gathered some of our personal favorite spots that we hope you’ll consider checking out during your stay at The Francis.

Enticing Eats

LB Kitchen, located in the East End, is the perfect place to start your day on the right foot. With delicious smoothies, detox shots, salads, breakfast sandwiches, and more, this health-conscious—and notably gorgeous—spot is a wonderful option to fuel up before a day of sight-seeing.

If you’re in the mood to indulge, we highly recommend The Pink Waffle food truck. With both savory and sweet waffle options and their delicious homemade ice cream, there’s something to satisfy every craving. Check out their Instagram @thepinkwaffleme to see where you can find their truck throughout Southern Maine!

Sweet Sips

Looking for a yummy cocktail in an upbeat environment? Then you’ll want to make your way to Cocktail Mary. Located in the East End with fabulous disco ball décor, delicious drinks and exciting events, this spot has become a hub for the LGBTQ+ community.

If you’re in the mood for a moody vibe, head a couple blocks down from The Francis to The Jewel Box. This classy cocktail bar is conveniently located just a 6 minute walk from our doors. Featuring creative cocktails, cool music and a cozy space, this is a great place for a night cap. And if you’re feeling frisky, they also host weekly karaoke on Wednesday nights!

Cool Coffees

Take a few steps out our doors at The Francis and find yourself at Yordprom Coffee. Known for their Vietnamese Iced Coffee, this is a convenient and delicious stop to grab some breakfast and caffeine before heading out on your Portland adventures.

If you find yourself in the Old Port, be sure to stop into Higher Grounds. This cannabis coffee shop doubles as an apothecary, serving up classic lattes with the option to add a dose of CBD—the perfect blend of energy and calm. The owner stays strong in their values to break ground in the cis-male dominated cannabis industry and creating a safe and empowering place to work for LGBTQ+ employees.

Serene Shops

Looking to align your chakras or embrace your spiritual side? Check out ARCANA, located in the Old Port. Here you’ll find aligning crystals, beautiful jewelry and queer-led yoga, reiki and more!

Want to flex your green thumb? Need a thoughtful gift for a loved one? Stop by Plant Office in the East End. The owner has created this space on a foundation of his values of fighting for social justice issues and creating a safe place to explore one’s individuality.

We hope you’ll take our advice and stop by one or all of these wonderful LGBTQ+ owned businesses during your Portland getaway. If you’re looking for more businesses to check out, head to the links below:
