winter clothing Maine vacation tracy orzel photographyWe’ll let you deal with your skivvies, but we have suggestions for the rest. Follow along to our guide to ensure you pack all the right things while leaving the unnecessary ones behind.

Layers layers layers

Maine can be a tad fickle in the winter, but coming prepared will have you more than ready to explore Portland’s snowy and charming streets. Layers are of utmost importance to ensure that you have everything you need in any kind of weather.

2-3 Long-Sleeved Shirts

This is an essential part of the Maine layering system. Great under a coat on a mild day but essential under a sweater on the extra cold ones. This also allows you the option to take off your sweater when you walk into a steamy coffee shop or clothing store without suffering through the sweat.

2-3 Sweaters

It’s good to have a variety here. If you’re coming for a short stay, one lighter sweater and one heavier sweater should do the trick. If staying for longer, maybe you’ll want more variety. Either way, cozy sweaters are essential—especially after that sun goes down.

1 Pair of Leggings or Long-Johns

Whether you’re going on a snowy ice-skating or cross-country skiing adventure, or just happen to be strolling through town window-shopping, you’ll be happy to have this extra layer on underneath your pants to keep your knees toasty.

2 Pairs of Pants

Depending on your plans, the pants are up to some interpretation. Either way, we recommend pants with a little more wiggle room in case it’s cold enough to justify the under-layer. Portland locals don’t get too fancy, especially in the winter, so don’t worry too much about dressing up. With warm Bean Boots, a sturdy flannel and the right outerwear, you’ll fit right in and stay just as warm as the locals.

A Warm Winter Coat

If you know you’ll be layering up, make sure you have a jacket that can handle the layers below. You don’t want to feel like Ralphie from A Christmas Story, so bring your warmest jacket that has a little extra wiggle room for your cozy sweaters.

Don’t forget about your feet!

Heads, shoulders, knees, and toes. One of the parts of the body that gets coldest fastest—make sure you’re prepared to keep those tootsies warm.

Wool Socks

What’s winter without a cozy thick pair of socks? We Mainers know the importance of taking care of your feet in the winter. Either with a nice pair of wool/insulated socks, or any thicker pair that you have, you can make sure that you’ll be cozy and comfortable while walking around the city.

Sturdy Boots

You can leave the stilettos and dress shoes at home—boots are essentials here in Maine. With the uneven cobblestone streets and a thin layer of salt everywhere you go, you’ll be glad you brought in the heavy-duty shoes. Don’t worry if you don’t have the perfect boot—just bring your thickest sole, ideally with some grip.

The unforgettable extras

Commonly forgotten, but things you most definitely won’t want to forget!

Winter accessories

Hats and scarves and gloves—oh my! Bring a couple if you want to change up your outfit each day but if you’re short on space, one of each of these items is plenty.

Lip Balm and Lotion

Chilly winter air leads to dry skin—do not forget your moisturizers! We prefer protective lip balms over ChapSticks as they block out the elements and protect the moisture we have. We also recommend a travel-sized lotion to carry in your pocket or bag—your hands will thank us later.

Sunglasses

Maine is notoriously sunny in the winter—and if there’s a layer of snow on the ground it can be extra bright. Don’t forget to pack a pair of sunnies to block out the glare.

As always, take a look at the weather in the week leading up to your trip to confirm the items that make sense for you, but we hope this helps you in your vacation preparation.
