For as popular and lively as summer in Maine is, we locals know that some of the most magical moments happen in the wintertime. From the quaint snow-lined streets to cozy bars and restaurants to fun and engaging outdoor activities, Portland really does have it all regardless of season. Join us at The Francis for a winter getaway and see what it’s all about! To help you start planning your trip, we’ve compiled some of our favorite winter activities from art museums to spa treatments and more.

Cross-country skiing at Deering Oaks Park

What better way to experience a Maine winter than getting out there in the fluffy snow? Gorham Bike & Ski makes it easy with cross-country ski rentals right around the corner from us at The Francis. Take your skis nearby to Deering Oaks park along their groomed ski trails, head out slightly north of Portland to Riverside Golf Course, or get more adventurous and check out some other trails around the area.

Wandering the halls of the Portland Museum of Art

A quick stroll down Congress Street will take you to the Portland Museum of Art, the largest and oldest public art institution in the state of Maine. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday with free admission on Fridays from 4pm until 8pm. If you’re in the mood for more art, culture or some one-of-a-kind exhibits, stop by the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art & Design, Cove Street Arts in East Bayside or the International Cryptozoology Museum.

Relaxing with a deep tissue massage in the Spa

No need to venture out into the cold for a restorative and rejuvenating massage while you’re staying at The Francis. All you have to do is wander down the hall! Our on-site spa offers a range of massage therapies and treatments that can all be tailored to your needs. Prenatal, hot towel, deep tissue, therapeutic…whatever you need, our amazing team will have the treatment for you.

Hopping from brewery to brewery throughout town

One thing Portland is known for regardless of season is our diverse selection of craft breweries. Plus, around town you’ll also find a craft seltzer + cider house, a meadery and a fermentory if you want to change things up. East Bayside and Industrial Way are well known for having a range of breweries all within walking distance or you can opt for an afternoon on the Maine Brew Bus which will drive you around town to some of the city’s best-known spots.

Curling up by the fire with a good book in the parlor or the drawing room at The Francis

Throughout winter our fireplaces will be crackling away, providing an ideal spot to sit and enjoy a relaxing morning or afternoon. Choose from the sunny parlor with views of the iconic Hay & Peabody clock and Congress Street or our cozy drawing room where you can take advantage of some quiet, uninterrupted time for yourself.

Catching a show downtown

One of our favorite things about Portland is the plethora of live music venues that each have their own unique style and atmosphere. From bigger headline shows at The State Theatre, to smaller, but lively art and music shows at Space Gallery, to a more intimate jazz-focused setting at Blue, to a variety of unique artistry at One Longfellow Square, there’s something for everyone all within a ten-minute walk from our doorstep. And there’s some great bars along the way to enjoy a pre-show cocktail. A few of our favorites include LFK, Congress Bar and Grill and The Jewel Box.

Enjoying a meal next door at Wayside Tavern

Juicy roasted chicken served atop ricotta toast with golden raisins and pine nuts. Bangs Island mussels coated in white wine and absinthe. Whole wheat tonnarelli tossed with rich guanciale and pecorino. Wayside Tavern knows their way around warming, comforting dishes. Plus, their cozy, inviting interior is one of our favorite spots for an incredible dinner during your visit to Portland.

Shopping up a storm around town

Peruse the locally owned gift shops in Old Port like Pinecone+Chickadee, Portland Trading Co. and Blanche + Mimi, spend some time digging through treasures at one of many secondhand stores like Weekend Vintage, Little Ghost Vintage or Moody Lords, or head north up to Freeport to visit the iconic LL Bean location and fit in some excellent outlet shopping.

Cheering on a local team like the Maine Celtics or the Mariners

Whether you’re a basketball or ice hockey fan, you’ll find a stadium right near the hotel where our local teams will be playing all winter. The Maine Celtics, formerly the Maine Red Claws, are an NBA G League team that play at the Portland Exposition Building and the Maine Mariners, affiliated with the Boston Bruins, play their home games at the Cross Insurance Arena.

Staying in bed just a little longer with treats from Tandem Bakery

We think one of the most luxurious things you can do for yourself when it’s cold outside is enjoy breakfast in bed. The best part is – we’ll bring it to you so you don’t even have to think about leaving your warm and cozy room. Opt for our Tandem Breakfast in Bed package during your stay and we’ll deliver a few of their famous baked goods and hot coffee to your room at 9am so that you’re really getting the rest and relaxation you deserve.
